What is kidney transplant?

  • End-stage renal failure patients require chronic dialysis which helps to replace part of the lost kidney functions. The therapy itself is demanding, time consuming and not without limitations.
  • Kidney transplantation is considered to be the most ideal treatment for end-stage renal failure patients in terms of disease outcome and quality of life.
  • Both ABO blood group matching & human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matching between the donor and recipient are required.
  • The first successful kidney transplant in Hong Kong was performed at the Queen Mary Hospital in 1969.

Criteria for deceased kidney donor

  • Brain death donor
  • Meet the general criteria for an organ donor
  • No history of renal disease
  • Normal renal function
  • Kidney donated from a viral hepatitis carrier can be transplanted to a recipient who is also a carrier
